Whether you’re a building owner, operator or occupant, creating a green community or looking to live more sustainably, Green Star offers a framework of best practice benchmarks for sustainability that the marketplace trusts. A Green Star rating is the trusted mark of quality for the design, construction and operation of sustainable buildings and fitouts in Australia.

What is Green Star?

Launched by the Green Building Council of Australia in 2003, Green Star is Australia’s only national, voluntary rating system for buildings and communities.

Green Star – Design & As Built: guiding the sustainable design and construction of a range of schools, offices, universities, industrial facilities, public buildings, retail centres and hospitals.

Green Star – Interiors: transforming the interior fitouts of everything from offices and hotels to schools and shops.

Green Star – Communities: improving the sustainability of projects at the neighbourhood, precinct or community scale

Green Star – Performance: supporting higher levels of operations efficiency within existing buildings.

Why Choose Green Star?

Commercial buildings typically consume large amounts of energy annually. Providing building operations combined with efforts to maintain an acceptable level of occupant comfort generally results in excess energy consumption and skyrocketing costs. Electricity cost increases have seen an even greater impact on energy bills and company profits, representing a massive financial challenge for companies that can only be addressed by more efficient use of energy. Green Star ratings provide retailers with opportunities to achieve higher sales, attract and retain high-performing staff, and deliver a better experience for customers.

Achieving a Green Star Rating

Green Star ratings are available for every building type, so whether your building is a school or a shopping centre, a hospital or a hotel, it can achieve a Green Star rating.

Green Star assesses and rates buildings, fitouts, and communities against a range of environmental impact categories. Green Star rating tools for individual building and fitout design, construction and operations assess projects for:

  • • Management Indoor
  • • Environment
  • • Quality
  • • Energy Transport
  • • Water Materials Land Use and Ecology
  • • Emissions
  • • Innovation

The Green Star rating system assesses the sustainability of projects at all stages of the built environment lifecycle.

A Green Star – Design, As Built, Interiors and Communities projects can achieve a Green Star certification of 4 – 6 Star Green Star. Buildings assessed using the Green Star – Performance rating tool can achieve a Green Star rating from 1 – 6 Star Green Star.

  • • On average, Green Star-certified buildings use 66% less electricity than average Australian buildings
  • • Green Star-certified buildings save the equivalent of 76,000 average households’ electricity use annually.
  • • Green Star-certified buildings save enough potable water to fill 1,320 Olympic swimming pools every year – over 3,300,000 kL per annum – which is 51% less potable water than if they had been built to meet minimum industry requirements.

Green Star Buildings also create a healthier place for people to work or live resulting in attracting more tenants, while also minimising their environmental footprint and contributing to building a sustainable future for everyone.

When you can achieve high environmental ratings you also reduce exposure to commercial risk and asset obsolescence by future proofing assets and investments.
